Akinbode Akinbiyi was born 1946 in Oxford, England; He studied at the universities of Ibadan, Nigeria; Lancaster; and Heidelberg before taking up photography in 1974. His upbringing, schooling and tertiary education led him to become a visual artist intent on the story-telling aspects of photography. His main area of photographic concern is large sprawling cities. In 1987 he was awarded the Stern Reportage scholarship, which enabled him to continue his long-term project on the mega-cities of Lagos, Cairo, Johannesburg and Kinshasa. He is the founding member of the UMZANSI cultural centre in Durban and curator of the Biennial for African Photography in Bamako in 2001 and 2003. His works have been widely published and shown in numerous exhibitions. He now lives in Berlin.
